Sleep?... What sleep?

Why is it that kids get to do what every adult wants to do and adults get to do everything the kids want to? I would love to sleep for ten hours straight each night, take multiple naps and get fed a meal made just for me all throughout the day, Ezra however does not. This week we started on a few new adventures. Ezra's sleeping has been extra terrible this week. I know we have pretty much had visitors non-stop since his last surgery and another one coming tomorrow, which means he gets kicked out of his room, but it has been really bad. I spent somewhere around four hours Wednesday night holding an empty bottle in Ezra's mouth. (He can't have a pacifier, but clearly wants to suck on one, so his bottle has become his best friend.) He has ended up in our bed (which I swore I would never do) quite a few of those nights because we are both too tired to stand next to his crib for hours on end. So out of sheer desparation we decided to start Ferberizing him. We originally planned to wait until the end of our guests, but we just couldn't hack it anymore. It is awful, but doable, and hopefully worth it. I felt like it was worse than surgery the first night, simply because you just have to let them cry for 5, 10 or 15 minute intervals. At least with all the crying going on post surgery I could attempt to comfort him. However, tonight (night 2) he fell asleep with less than five minutes of crying (partially because I'm pretty sure he was exhausted). Now lets hope he doesn't wake up twice in the night like last night.

After a short post-Ferber nap
Ezra snoozed a little more in his swing
while listening to lullaby's...what a life!

We also attempted a sippy cup on Wednesday and rice cereal tonight. Neither went over well, but not too bad. I'm just glad that he will be able to use a sippy cup after his next surgery, which by the way is scheduled for Oct. 5th. We thought he would have to be using a regular cup by then and a sippy cup will be so much better. I'm hoping that by next week Ezra will be checking on me as I sleep the night through, and spoon feeding me all day while I lay around and play with toys; but something tells me that is not going to happen.

Good luck getting some sleep. After we had so much trouble getting Sadie to sleep, I used Baby Wise with Sawyer...it was great. He still sleeps better than Sadie ever though of sleeping. At least Ezra swallowed the cereal...that is a start.

Ah the sleep adventures! You are not alone. I love the Ferber method because it's less awful than just letting them cry it out all alone, forever. It worked for us with Chase. Oh yeah here's some unsolicited advice about the sippy cup thing: Have you heard of Nuby sippy cups? They are sippy cups but the "sippy" part is soft like a bottle nipple. We liked those for the transition time. However, they had BPA in the past, so you might want to make sure they're BPA-free before buying any. Good luck with the sleep situation, I know it's so hard not to get enough sleep ever!

I LOVE the video!! It is so good to hear Ezra's sounds and see him in action. I'm sorry about the sleep thing. We had some really rough nights when we first had Ava and swore she would never land in our bed, but a couple of nights she did sleep with one of us holding her in our bed...sometimes your body is just too worn out and you have to give in. I'm happy to report now she is an awesome sleeper and is doing well in her crib. She actually just started sleeping through the night this past week (1am-9am)...YAHOO! We did stay at Grandma & Grandpa Bowling's the other night and we all shared a room...not good! She didn't sleep as well and neither did I, so I feel for you and Ezra being kicked out of his room. I will think good thoughts for you tonight and hope you get some sleep. Take care and give Ezra a big squeeze from us.

We have decided to not start Jett on rice cereal yet because he is obviously thriving on milk alone, but when I do I am sure it will be an adventure just as you have had. With school being out I have had to rearrange Jett's schedule and so far so good. I am glad you have found a sleep method that works. Good luck and I love the video! His little sounds are so cute. I am counting down to July... only 83 days to go. HOORAY!

EmmaLee,
I just looove seeing Ezra grow! He looks great...and I totally feel you about the sleep thing. Don't you wish we could just sleep like when we were still in college? What? It's 11 am already...oh, yes I do miss those days. :) I miss you too!

Whoever coined the phrase "sleeping like a baby" clearly never had one!
